MAYETTA, KS- July 3 -The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation (PBPN) will present checks totaling $91,000 at a Charitable Contributions ceremony on July 12 at 11 a.m. at the Prairie Band Casino & Resort. Members from the PBPN Charitable Contributions Committee and Tribal Council will be on hand to deliver the checks to various organizations and the public is invited to attend.
Local organizations receiving donations this quarter include Our Lady of the Snows Church ($10,000) and We-Ta-Se American Legion #410 ($5,500) for activities they have planned, and also receiving a large donation this quarter is the Hays Arts Council ($10,000) that has created a large State of Kansas historical mural that includes the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation as a prominent subject. The mural is scheduled to be temporarily hung in the State Capitol building and then permanently displayed in the new Visitors Center when it is completed. The mural’s artist, Dennis Schiel, has created a total of 10 three-foot by four-foot panels with the state’s history painted over a background map of Kansas. The total size of the mural is 17 feet wide by 8.25 tall.
Other donations are being given to several Topeka groups including Meals on Wheels ($9,000), Stormont Vail Foundation ($5,000), Doorstep,Inc. ($5,000), Fiesta Mexicana ($5,000), YMCA Safe Visits ($5,000), Race Against Breast Cancer ($5,000) and the Topeka Active Club ($4,000), to name a few. For a complete list click here.
The Charitable Contributions Committee is comprised of six tribal members, who along with the Tribal Council selected 25 various organizations to receive the quarterly distributions. Areas that are focused on when determining the distribution of funds include groups involved in education, health and community services, environmental protection and preservation, and religious organizations that have an impact on the spiritual wellness and quality of life for all.
