MAYETTA:  The Firekeepers Elder Center has temporarily moved their meal site to the Bingo Hall for the next two weeks while the ceiling in the kitchen of the Elder Center is being repaired.

The kitchen staff began preparing and serving meals today at the Bingo Hall to diners.  Home-bound meal deliveries will not change but there will be no birthday dinner scheduled for this Thursday, even though a luncheon meal will be served.

Nona Wahweotten, director of the Firekeepers Elder Center, said,  “Meals are being served at the Bingo Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for the next two weeks and the Center at 15372 K Road will close from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  People who need a ride to the temporary meal site can catch a ride at the Elder Center if they are there no later than 10:50 a.m. and are willing to stay until 1 p.m. or whenever the Center is reopened.  The building will resume operations in the afternoons from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and morning hours from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. week days.”

Michelle Wabaunsee, who cooks for the Elder Center, said that today’s preparation of the meal in the Bingo Hall’s kitchen went very smooth.  She said that the Bingo Hall’s kitchen was in good condition and really clean thanks to the PBPN building maintenance crew.  In the last few months, the building/maintenance staff has been painting walls and cleaning the equipment in the kitchen as well as renovating the common area of the hall as time permits.

It should be noted that the January luncheon menu is scheduled to change due to smaller kitchen space and fewer appliances. Wabaunsee said that normally the kitchen staff has use of three ovens and larger warming areas and that they are having to adjust the menu to accommodate what they can do.

The Bingo Hall is located on Q Road and is a red building that sits slightly south of the Government Center.  For details call 785.966.2103 or 785.966.0040.
