7/21/2023 – Tribal Enrollment has been a topic of interest over the course of the last few years within the membership of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. During this time, many discussions on this topic have taken place during General Council meetings, multiple town halls, and a mailout was sent out to gather feedback on the topic.
Tribal Council has now directed to send out a ballot measure to gauge the interest of the eligible voting membership whether or not to change the eligibility criteria.
An eligible voter is any enrolled PBPN Tribal member who is at least 18 years of age and has an address on file.
The current requirements for membership are listed in the Nation’s Constitution in Article III – Membership, which can be accessed through the Nation’s website (link) at pbpindiantribe.com/government/our-constitution.
The ballot measure is only asking whether the eligible voting member wishes to leave the requirements for membership as is, or if they wish to see the requirements changed in the Tribal Constitution.
The response to this ballot will NOT immediately change the requirements. Should the Nation’s membership wish to change the requirements of membership it will require an official Referendum Election.
All ballots must be received by 9AM, Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at the Mayetta Post office or they will not be counted. No hand-delivered ballots will be accepted.
