GARY E. “Shaw – Nosh” MITCHELL

MAYETTA- Gary E. “Shaw – Nosh” Mitchell, 63, of Mayetta, KS passed away Friday, January 23, 2015 at Stormont Vail Hospital. He was born February 8, 1951 in Holton, KS the son of Andrew Mitchell, Sr. and Alberta Marie Nagmo.
Gary graduated from Mayetta High School in 1969. He also graduated from Washburn University with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science and from Baker University with a Masters in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in History.
Gary served 28 years for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. He was past Treasurer, Chairman and Vice-Chairman of Tribal Council. He currently was Chairman of Tribal Gaming Commission. He was Tribal Historian, and spoke the Potawatomi language that he learned from his mother. He was a writer of many stories; including his published book “Stories of the Potawatomi”. Gary loved reading, writing, gardening, friends, family, coaching “Big Red Machine” and watching KU Basketball.
Gary was a member of Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and Drum Religion. He was a Drum Chief.
He married Voncile Potts on April 20, 1971 in Hiawatha, KS. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his mother, Judith Wabaunsee of Topeka; 3 daughters, Joanna “Dumps” Mitchell and Martie Ann Mitchell both of Mayetta, KS and Rose Allen of Horton; 5 sisters, Jackie Mitchell of Mayetta, KS, Shirlene Seymour of Winnebago, NE, Sandy Mitchell, Lisa Wamego and Edie Wamego all of Mayetta, KS; 5 brothers, Eddie Joe Mitchell of Mayetta, KS, Leo Mitchell of Valley Falls, KS, Randy Mitchell, John LeClere and Mando Evans all of Mayetta, KS; 5 grandchildren, Tara, Waskeh, Kek, Luis and Patko and 4 great-grandchildren, Taylor, Shug, Oshketah and Kweh Kweh Gee.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andy Mitchell, Sr. and Alberta Wamego and step-father, Algernon Wamego; his (1 spirit/ 2 hearts) twin brother, Larry Mitchell, Sr., brothers, Andrew Mitchell, Jr. and Mike Wamego.
Drum Service will be Monday evening, January 26, 2015 at the Danceground Building. Burial will be Tuesday afternoon, January 27, 2015 in Mitchell Cemetery.
