Robert J. Mahkuk
MAYETTA- Robert Joseph “Na-Naw-We” Mahkuk, 50, of Mayetta, KS passed away Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Stormont Vail Hospital. He was born October 8, 1966 in Holton, KS the son of Fred Mahkuk and Vernona L. “Vernie” Knoxsah Lewis.
Bob graduated from Two Eagle River School in 1984 in Dixon, MT. He had spent most of his life on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Common Land and had also lived in Montana and Washington.
Bob was a Forest Fire Fighter in Montana; mostly working in the mountain forests. He also worked construction, building bridges for Midwest Construction in Holton.
He was a member of Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, Native American Church and the Carpenters Union.
Survivors include his mother, Vernie Lewis of Mayetta, KS; father, Fred Mahkuk of Wisconsin; 6 children, Brandy Mahkuk of Pablo, MT, Shovonne Mahkuk of Wolfpoint, MT, Isaac Mahkuk of Polson, MT, Ivan Mahkuk of Polson, MT, Battice “Batman” Mahkuk of Delia, KS and Mariah Mahkuk of Delia, KS; 9 sisters, Anna Mahkuk of Topeka, KS, Linda Mahkuk of Belvue, KS, Rebecca DeVore of Topeka, KS, Mary Mahkuk of Ronan, MT, Marissa Mahkuk of Missoula, MT, Shannon Hurd of Wichita, KS, Jeanette Mahkuk-Scott of Topeka, KS, Vicky Mahkuk-Malatare of Ronan, MT and Terry Hernandez of Minco, OK; 4 brothers, J.C. Mahkuk of Montana, Matthew Mahkuk of Montana, Melvin Lewis of Robinson, KS and Daniel Adler of Moise, MT and 14 grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his step-father, Gerald F. “Pukinia” Lewis on May 30, 2017 and a brother, Tony “Nack-Twa-Tuck” Mahkuk in 2004.
Native American Services will be Sunday evening, July 9, 2017 at the Native American Church. Burial will be Monday morning, July 10, 2017 in Mahkuk Cemetery.
