SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Marking a historic milestone in the national Land Back movement, the Illinois Legislature voted yesterday to transfer Shabbona Lake State Park back to Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation (Senate Bill 867).
The following is a statement from Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Chairman Joseph “Zeke” Rupnick:
“175 years ago, our land was taken from us in violation of multiple treaties. Today, with this historic vote, Illinois has taken a meaningful step toward righting that wrong. We are deeply grateful for the leadership, dedication and commitment of the Illinois Legislature and the many individuals who worked tirelessly to make this possible.
“This moment reflects the power of collaboration and the shared desire to build a future rooted in justice and respect. Illinois has shown true courage and vision by leading the way in the Land Back movement, demonstrating that healing and reconciliation are possible.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the bill’s sponsors, state Sen. Mark Walker (D-Arlington Heights), state Rep. Will Guzzardi (D-Chicago), Senate President Don Harmon, House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and Governor JB Pritzker’s administration for their unwavering support.
“We look forward to building a future of partnership and mutual respect with the state of Illinois. We are proud to once again call this land home.”
